Jostedalsbreen

The glacier of Jostedalen is the largest ice-sheet in mainland Europe and covers almost half of the Jostedalsbreen National Park. The ice-sheet stretches for 60 km and has many valley glaciers, rising from 300 m to 2000 m. The highest point of the glacier is the peak, Lodalskåpa with 2082 m. This is a possible daytrip starting from Bødalssetra close to Loen. The old routes in the valleys around the glacier, such as Oldeskardet and Supphelleskardet, offer exciting walking tours. The valley glaciers of Briksdal, Fjærland and Nigardsbreen are well-known and paths lead right to the glacier in many places, including Kjenndalen and Austerdalen.

The glacier is an attractive area for walking and skiing. Skiing the length of the glacier has become popular the recent years. Without specialist knowledge and proper equipment, however, walking or skiing on the glaicer is highly dangerous.
