When to go?
For skiing: The coldest months are from December to February. During these days is it also minimum of daylight and in the northern part of Norway is it dark during the day. The best time for ski tours are then from March to Mai. For ski-enthusiasts is it possible to go summer-skiing at Stryn Sommerskicentre.
For hiking: For hiking in the mountains are the best months from the end of June to the end of September. The warmest months are normally July/August. The autumn (Sept/Oct) is also a very nice time for walking with the beautiful colours and fresh air.

Where to buy maps?
You can order maps by the Norwegian Mountain Touring Association (DNT). They sell maps of hole Norway, scale: 1:50'000 (M711). Also tour maps, local maps and maps for Svalbard and Sweden. This can be ordered in advance (www.dntoslo.no, e-mail: turinfo@dntoslo.no) or buy direct in their office in Oslo or in the other bigger towns. They can also help you with advices for moutaineering. The book stores in Norway has also normally a good offer of maps.

For the winter
The mountains can be quite rough in the winter time. Normally it is very cold and often windy. The weather can change very fast in the Norwegian mountains. This requires the right equipment and good planning. We recommend you to check this equipment list.

The mountain rules
In Norway we have something called; Fjellvettreglene - rules for mountaineering. These rules have excisted since several generations and are still relevant. You should be aware of these rules before you go on a tour. Read about the nine rules here.
