TOUR DESCRIPTION

Trollheimen is a beautiful area with spectacular mountains, wide valleys and vigorous vegetation. Most of the DNT-cabins in this area are old, charming timber houses with grass at the roof.

Oslo - Gjevilvasshytta

After a nice train journey from Oslo, we continued by bus to Festa. It is worth to walk this 12 km to Gjevilvasshytta, because the area is very beautiful. The lake, Gjevilvatnet is surrounded by the spectacular mountains. Close to the hut there is a big, natural sand beach.

Gjevilvasshytta - Jøldalshytta (~ 6 h. + break)

The day after we continued direction Jøldalshytta. We walked through soft landscape and we got surprised of a big tribe of reindeer. Below the lodge it is a nice fish lake (fish cards are available in the staffed huts).

Jøldalshytta - Trollheimshytta (~ 7 h. + break)

The third day went over one of the most known mountain in this area, Trollhetta (1'614 m.). This mountain has a special formation. Rising the top is about 900 m. and some parts are necessary to climb. Down to Trollheimshytta it was quite steep and only rocks and stones. This cabin lies in an idyllic area with a wonderful view over Trollhetta and Snota.

Trollheimshytta - Kårvatn (~ 7 h. + break)

The fourth day was quite long and it was much bog at the beginning. The terrain was soft, with small lakes, waterfalls and blueberries allover. We enjoyed a fresh bath in a lake. Quite steep down to the valley where the lodge, Kårvatn lies. This cabin is a part of a beautiful Norwegian farmhouse. It is a self service hut, but it is possible to buy fresh milk, meat or eggs from the farmer.

Kårvatn - Innerdalshytta (~ 5 h. + break)

Innerdalen (the valley of Innerdalen) was our next stop. Because of the steep mountains it is popular to go climbing here. At the way we went over the pass, Bjøråskaret, with a breathtaking view over the peaks in Innerdalen. We stayed for two nights in Innerdalshytta.

Innerdalshytta - Sunndalen (~ 5 h. + break)

The last day we wanted to climb Innerdalstårnet (Norway's Matterhorn) at the way back, but it was too foggy. The last part down to Faleøyan in Sunndalen was quite steep and slippery, because of the rain. From there we continued with the "Kristiansand -bus" to Sunndalsøra. We wanted to continue with an hiking in Tafjordfjella, but we had to make a long journey to reach our starting point.

The public transport connections is not very good at the countryside, so we had to take a bus to Molde - Åndalsnes - train through the spectacularly Romsdalen to Bjorli. Here we started our next adventure in Tafjordfjella.

ALTERNATIVE

For a shorter tour it is possible to make the triangle, also in winter: Gjevilvasshytta - Jøldalshytta - Trollheimshytta - Gjevilvasshytta.
